چکیده

This study aimed (i) to assess the ability of electronic nose (e-nose) technology to differentiate between blood samples of experimentally infected and non-infected subjects, and (ii) to evaluate e-nose responses given by volatile organic compounds in relation to the acute phase reaction generated in the host. In an animal model of gram-negative bacterial infection (20 calves; intratracheal inoculation of Mannheimia haemolytica A1), the concentrations of the acute phase proteins (APPs; i.e. lipopolysaccharide binding protein and haptoglobin) were measured in serum samples before and after challenge, and headspaces of preand post-inoculation serum samples were analysed using a conducting polymer based e-nose. Significant changes of certain e-nose sensor responses allowed discrimination between samples before and after challenge. The maximal changes in responses of sensitive e-nose sensors corresponded to the peak of clinical signs. Significant correlations linked decreasing responses of multiple e-nose sensors to increasing concentrations of APPs in the peripheral blood.

Antioxidant Enzymes and Acute Phase Proteins Correlate with Marker of Lipid Peroxide in Adult Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients

Objective(s) Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic haemolytic anaemia. Haemoglobin S containing red blood cells may be susceptible to oxidative stress due to imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species and the countering effect of the various antioxidants present in the body. Materials and Methods We evaluated some antioxidant enzymes which include gl...

The relationships among acute phase response proteins, cytokines, and enzymes during ovine experimental endotoxemia

BACKGROUND: The acute phase response is beneficial to theanimal in restoring homeostasis, and measuring the circulatingacute phase proteins, cytokines, and enzymes can be used toevaluate the innate immune system's responses to invader agentssuch as bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Measurement of theseparameters has shown to be useful as diagnostic and prognosticmarkers in animal endotoxemia. OBJEC...

Diagnosing viral and bacterial respiratory infections in acute COPD exacerbations by an electronic nose: a pilot study.

Respiratory infections, viral or bacterial, are a common cause of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). A rapid, point-of-care, and easy-to-use tool distinguishing viral and bacterial from other causes would be valuable in routine clinical care. An electronic nose (e-nose) could fit this profile but has never been tested in this setting before. In a single-cente...

Acute phase proteins as local biomarkers of respiratory infection in calves

BACKGROUND Cumulating reports suggest that acute phase proteins (APPs) do not only play a role as systemic inflammatory mediators, but are also expressed in different tissues as local reaction to inflammatory stimuli. The present study aimed to evaluate presence and changes in luminal lung concentrations of the APPs haptoglobin (Hp), lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), C-reactive protein ...

Acute-phase proteins and antioxidant status in cows naturally infected by hydatid cysts in the Razavi Khorasan Province

Parasitic infections can be extremely problematic for animals and humans. Host-parasite relationships may be different between species. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Haptoglobin (Hp), Serum amyloid-A (SAA), Alpha -1- acid glycoprotein (AGP), Albumin (ALB), Total protein (TP), Globulin (GLB), Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) following natural infect...
